Dogwood Winter

Wearing white crosses,
dogwoods wash the mountains
with snow; a cold snap.

The bluebirds give a cantata,
trillium dance in pink slippers
among the fern; a cold snap.

Lambs frolic in verdant pastures,
jonquils dot the banks
of Hyatt Mill Creek; a cold snap.

Butterflies sip nectar
from blankets of purple phlox,
fragrance wafts on a chilled breeze.
                    --Brenda Kay Ledford

Granny Trese Shook Lee said when the dogwood trees bloom and we have a cold snap, that it's "Dogwood Winter."

The old-timers had names for these cold spells that came in spring.  "Blackberry Winter" will come when the blackberries bloom.

I wish my blogger friends a very Happy Easter!

Beautiful poem Brenda. I said the same Dogwood winter it is. We usually do have several winters before it's over and this year I can honestly say I'll be so happy to see the warm weather stick around. Thank you for your sweet card. I'm doing some better and will be seeing the Specialist this week. I'll try to update you later on. Thanks for your prayers and concerns. Happy Easter to you and your mother.

We're having a cold snap presently. A fire feels good this afternoon. We still refer to blackberry winter for we always have one it seems.

Blessed Easter to you, Brenda!

Oh, I really like this poem, Brenda. You've really captured how spring is right now in the descriptive words you used. And I like "a cold snap" at the end of each verse, especially. And boy, are we getting one tomorrow. Dogwood Winter indeed. We have a blackberry thicket in the pasture, but it got frozen out back in the winter. I'll have to start all over.
Have a great week!

Looks like we are having a cold snap here in the Shenandoah.

Another beautiful poem, Brenda! We had to take our dogwood out of the ground today - got a new fence going in, but it's waiting with its roots covered for a new home.
