Fireflies
On
a soft summer evening,
lightning
bugs flicker in the forest,
and
put on a splendid show.
Like
stars glittering in trees,
fireflies
flashing their lights,
high
beams, low beams.
My Grandma Minnie always said,
“Fireflies
bring strawberry pies.
They
fly when wild strawberries ripen.”
Siblings
and I caught fireflies
in
a Mason jar with holes in the lid,
our
dog frolicked through the woods.

I use to catch fireflies in jars too and watch them at night. Released back again in the morning. I love seeing them now twinkling in the trees behind our house now. Janice
Love this.
Happy 4th of July to you as well.
Beautiful poem, Brenda. Happy Birthday to America, too!
Love watching fireflies!
Love your poem! My sister and I caught lightning bugs and kept them in a mason jar with holes poked in the lid overnight. Then we let them go next day. We loved them!
You are so lucky to see fireflies. I have only got to see them one time at a lake when I was small. I guess there is too much poisoning in our area with the cotton fields around us, or all of the gas/oil industry destroying the environment. Love your poem!
