At age 98, my neighbor, Mrs. Thelma Howard, plants a vegetable garden each year. I wrote a poem about her inspiring everyone on Swaims Road. When I brought the framed poem to her house, she was hanging laundry on the line. Each morning when she gets up, Mrs. Thelma takes a shower, puts on her work clothes and keeps busy with gardening and housework. She said with a laugh, "Age is just a number, and mine is unlisted." She's a great person and motivates our community to "keep on keeping on."
THELMA HOWARD
Even to your old age I am He, I will sustain you.
--Isaiah 46:4 (NIV)
She's the Viking
of Swaims Road
shaming the slothful.
One more year,
the warrior tackles
hardening soil with vengeance.
The 98-year-old woman
pushes past comfort
to plant her garden.
At her home church,
she invites me to sit
on her favorite pew.
There's nothing you can catch
from me but old age, she says
with a laugh and her eyes sparkle.
Using her spiritual gifts,
Mrs. Thelma Howard
makes a unique mark on life.

She's an inspiration! I love the poem you wrote and I bet she did too.
What an amazing woman, and how blessed she is to still be able to do all that she does. To me that is truly remarkable, and a great inspiration..
I love her comment that age is just a number, and hers is unlisted. It sounds like she has a great sense of humor as well.
Mrs. Thelma Howard sets the bar high for the rest of us, Brenda. This is a tribute that I pray her family and friends will treasure. Blessings!
Truly a woman to inspire us all. I'm sure your poem made her day!!
Lovely poem and good for her!
wow...98 years old and still gardens...this is AWESOME! May be the reason she has lived such a long life. She sounds like a Blessing not only to you, but to many. This is a beautiful tribute to her.
What an inspiring neighbor, for sure! She sounds like my grandmother, who was my still abiding inspiration and example! What a blessing!
Wonderfully written, I can almost see her in my mind. Thanks for honoring your neighbor. I hope that I can still be working in my garden when I reach that age :)
What a beautiful tribute to Mrs. Thelma. The line "Age is just a number, and mine is unlisted" is absolutely brilliant, she sounds like she has a sharp wit to match that incredible work ethic.
The senior saints among us are such a wonderful inspiration. What a blessing to have Mrs. Howard as your neighbor!!
