PIE CRUST
She leans her elbows
on the kitchen counter,
watches every move.
I measure the ingredients
making my first pie crust.
"You're wasting stuff!"
With trembling hands,
I scoop flour,
sprinkle the floor.
Mama sweeps it up:
"The secret to cooking
is to clean as you go."
I nod, knead the dough,
roll it paper thin.
The shell tears
as I press it into the pan.
She pats my shoulder.
There is so much
to love in a torn shell.

Hi Brenda, Hope you are having a good summer.... I remember the days when my mother made pie crusts like that... I never learned... Mom wanted me to learn to cook--but this ole tom-boy wanted to be outside playing cops and robbers with the boys!!!!!! BUT--oh how I love my mother's pies (and pie crusts). I don't think I've ever tasted a pie crust as good as hers.... YUM...
Hugs,
Betsy
What a sweet memory of learning to cook at your mother's side!
Oh Brenda, this is just so special! I can just see a little girl struggling to make the crust just right; or is it me, trying my best to make a pretty crust?
What a lovely poem!
Beautiful Brenda. I've yet to master a good pie crust but still trying after all these years. Hope you're enjoying the summer. I'll be glad to see Fall myself.
I never mastered the craft of making a pie crust. I admire those who have the skill. I'll be Blanche makes a good one. Lovely poem, Brenda.
awww. made me miss my mom. i used to watch her make pie crusts... and bread.
Ah, this is a lovely poem, Brenda. It takes patience to learn cooking and baking skills and patience to teach them to someone else too. I've never been able to bake very good pies, but I do OK with cakes and cookies. :)
Oh, how I wish I could master making the pie crust -- and cleaning up as I go. I am a messy cook. My cousin's husband makes delicious pies and pie crusts. I always thought if I ever entered a pie contest, I would have him make the crust for me. Loved the poem, Brenda. I like writing poems about remembrances - so we and others after us can remember.
I like this....and congrats for having this published!!
